The Sims re-release shows what’s wrong with big publishers and single-player games

Sims converse in a living room

It is the 12 months 2000 once more, as a result of I’ve simply spent the previous week enjoying The Sims, a recreation that would have had a resurgent zeitgeist second if solely EA, the notorious recreation writer, had put sufficient effort in.

Just a few days in the past, EA re-released two of its most legendary video games: The Sims and The Sims 2. Dubbed the “The Legacy Assortment,” these couldn’t even be referred to as remasters. EA simply put the unique video games on Steam with some minor patches to make them a little bit extra more likely to work on some fashionable machines.

The emphasis of that sentence must be on the phrase “some.” Boards and Reddit threads had been flooded with participant feedback, saying the sport both would not launch in any respect, crashed shortly after launch, or had debilitating graphical points. (Patches have been occurring, however there’s work to be executed but.)

Additional, the releases lack primary options which are commonplace for just about all Steam releases now, like achievements or Steam Cloud help.

It took me a little bit of time to get it working myself, however I received there, and my time with the sport has jogged my memory of two issues. First, The Sims is a singular expertise that’s worthy of its lofty legacy. Second, The Sims deserves higher than this lackluster re-release.

EA didn’t meet its personal commonplace

Look, it is high-quality to re-release a recreation with out remastering it. I am truly glad to see the sport’s authentic belongings as they at all times had been—it is deeply nostalgic, and there is at all times a tinge of disappointment when a remaster overwrites the work of the unique artists. That is not a priority right here.

But when you are going to re-release a recreation on Steam in 2025, there are minimal expectations—particularly from an organization with the assets of EA, and much more so for a recreation that’s this essential and beloved.

The sport must reliably run on fashionable machines, and it must help primary platform options like cloud saves or achievements. It isn’t a lot to ask, and it is not what we received.
