Rug or Chaise? BUDDE and Nando Studio Say, Why Not Both

Whereas rugs have their place, sometimes underfoot, who’s to say they’ll’t rise as much as meet us in fully new methods? That’s the pondering behind DUNE, a sculptural collaboration between German design studio BUDDE and Cologne-based Nando Studio. Debuting at Milan Design Week at Galleria Rossana Orlandi, DUNE reimagines the normal rug as a completely purposeful chaise lounge, inviting customers to recline and replicate on how design can redefine the boundaries of standard typologies.

Drawing from the flowing landscapes of nomadic desert cultures, DUNE pays homage to the rug’s cultural significance as a gathering area and resting place. “The sample mimics the flowing dunes of a desert panorama, with a heat, shifting shade palette that displays the delicate modifications in daylight alongside the sand dunes,” shares designer Johannes Budde. The result’s a visible rhythm that’s been immortalized in tufted merino wool – each tactile and expressive.

At first look, the floor of DUNE seems comfortable and sculptural. However beneath that inviting kind lies a narrative of precision and adaptableness. Gun-tufted by Nando Studio in Cologne, the rug is supported by a bent aluminum body that may be simply connected or eliminated beneath both aspect. This provides customers the liberty to take pleasure in DUNE as a standard rug or remodel it right into a chaise lounge when the temper strikes. Whether or not used for lounging, gathering, or just as a centerpiece, that form of adaptability – progressive but demure and inconspicuous – redefines what we will anticipate from a rug, inviting new rituals for relaxation and rest.
