MEKELE, ETHIOPIA - JUNE 16: An aid worker distributes measured portions of yellow lentils to residents of Geha subcity at an aid operation run by USAID, Catholic Relief Services and the Relief Society of Tigray on June 16, 2021 in Mekele, Ethiopia. The distribution center at Geha is currently distributing aid to over 5,000 beneficiaries a day, a number that far exceeds its annual daily distribution numbers during the yearly drought conditions that affect the region. The numbers have increased due to the 7 month armed conflict and the recent destruction due to the locust infestation in 2020. G7 leaders recently called for unimpeded access for aid workers in the region where government forces and Eritrean troops have fought regional rebels starting last November. The UN has 350,000 people here are living in famine conditions, a characterization the Ethiopian government disputes, although they have admitted to "food insecurity" in Tigray.
