Tiwani Modern in Lagos is kicking off its 2025 exhibition program with Belonging In-Between, a solo showcase of works by Emma Prempeh. At simply 28, the U.Ok.-born artist has already made a mark along with her distinctive, wealthy impressionistic work. The exhibition comes contemporary off the announcement of her inclusion in Pharrell Williams’ upcoming Femmes exhibition in Paris.
In Belonging In-Between, Prempeh captures her mom’s homecoming to St. Vincent, 4 a long time after migrating to London. The journey marked a profound encounter with the locations and areas that formed her mom’s youth, prompting a wider reflection on matrilineage and the tales that make a household.
On the coronary heart of the exhibition is, because the gallery notes, “Prempeh’s pursuit of understanding what house or belonging means as a diasporan topic.” With familial stakes in Uganda, Ghana, the Caribbean and the UK, the artist grapples with the shifting complexities surrounding identification and belonging as integral, elusive and, at occasions, deeply complicated.
This private exploration culminates in a sequence of lush, cinematic compositions, the place figures, interiors and flowers fold into each other. The works are punctuated with gold leaves of schlag steel which mirrors the fluidity of reminiscence itself – altering, rusting and reworking with every passing second.
The exhibition is now on view by Might 24, 2025.
