Created throughout his keep in Tokyo, the featured work draw closely from his life within the Japanese capital: scenes of busy roads and buildings that kiss the sky, the neon-lit screens of gesen racing video games and epic clashes between nights and samurai. “Right here it appears to me that fantasy has discovered myriad methods to invade actuality, enhancing it, making it extra dreamlike,” famous Jullien. “This enchanted on a regular basis looks like the right resistance to trendy life.”
As with all of Jullien’s work, the present blends sincerity, nostalgia and pleasure with a profound idea of tranquility and escapism. The thought behind the citadel emerged from sifting via his uncle’s captain of hand-painted RPG miniatures as a child, enchanted by the magic-wielding, dragon-slaying adventures they’d play out on-screen – a psychological refuge he’s held onto ever since. “Years later, because the world appears increasingly dire, I’ve determined to go to Juju’s citadel as soon as extra, and open its doorways to the general public.”
The exhibition will open on July 12 and can stay on view via October 26.
